Are you frustrated with increasing the retention numbers of your team? Are you stuck on how to keep your team motivated and stay enthusiastic about their decision to go into business for themselves? Have you ever experienced a lack of individuals you recruit who stay for some longevity? Are you overwhelmed by the number of people who you recruit and who throw their hands up before they actually get started? Take a moment to read this post to learn a better way to retain the individuals you prospect and recruit inside your network marketing business.
What Is The Thing That Motivates People?
Throughout my years in business, I have found that leadership is best tested in the trenches. That definitely applies to people. It is not until a person’s back is up against the wall that he or she will push through a circumstance. When a person is up against a wall they have a vision in mind that is present and at the forefront, therefore motivating them to succeed in whatever the goal.
It is stated clearly in the Bible that you can have what you say as long as you believe. So, if you have a vision that you say is impossible then guess what it is not possible. However, if you say that it is possible guess what it is possible. No matter what you say you will have sufficient motivation to prove that. When you have someone who is constantly being a naysayer they will always have something that is wrong. They will not have confidence in the comp plan, or the products, maybe the leaders, or where the conferences are being held, etc. and they will spend all of their time and yours proving their vision to be true.
My wife has told me for years, Honey you are a visionary and you have a big vision. Because of the vision that has been placed in me I desire to create a multi-million dollar business that will motivate and improve the lives of individuals everywhere. I want to leave a life of possibilities for everyone’s life that God allows me to touch. I want to see the visions, goals, aspirations, desires, come true but it is all what you are looking to accomplish.
Do NOT Ask How Do I Motivate People-WRONG Question
Time and time and time and time again individuals who seek to become leaders fall into the vicious circle of trying to motivate their people. What happens is they recruit a few people and then try to get every ounce of productivity out of those few. Never going to happen, because that is not how network marketing business works. I do not want you to get confused, I am NOT saying to you not to support or work with the individuals that you recruit, but you have to know your vision cannot and should not be their vision. They are running their own business and should have their own vision for said business. It is not your job to force desires, dreams, goals, or aspirations into someone else’s’ head. Nor can you if you wanted to. Your job is simply put to plug your team into the system and if the system works your team will work.
Right View on Retention
Motivation can be somewhat of a sticky subject when it comes to your team. But if your goal is to have the greatest opportunity for motivating your team you have to begin to view motivation a little differently. The general question that comes up amongst new recruits who have recruited a few individuals is “How do I retain them.”
When you think of how to retain your recruits that should NOT be the focus. Yes, I said it should NOT be your focus. I do not want you to get it confused that retention is a bad thing, no retention itself is good but the focus is not. Your job is to inspire and that is the highest and best use of your time when trying to retain. Inspiration should be your focus and what I mean by that is you should NEVER try to manage your team because that is not always effective. What you should do is INSPIRE through your actions. Your recruiting actions will put a fire under them every single time. When you continue bringing new people in and recruiting this gives hope and drive to those who are following you. Try recruiting four new people and teaching them to recruit four then lend support to those who want support and see how they respond, but NEVER manage them.
Example: If you sponsored a person and were excited about the opportunity and three to four days later they called you saying that they wanted to quit and they were frustrated that they were unable to sponsor anyone and that the company isn't working. If you have such an experience what I would say to that is, the individual in this scenario is one who is probably unlikely to have what it takes to build the business. No matter what you do it will not help. Therefore instead of placating them or trying to pacify them ask them some direct questions.
Why did you join if you are going to quit in a week?
What do you anticipate gaining from joining?
What is possible if you do stick around?
What possibilities will you miss if you do not stick around?
Did you join for the long term or short term?
Did you join because it seemed popular or something to do?
Were you really trying to change your life or was it someone else's idea?
Typically if you hit someone with these questions and they realize that it was ridiculous for them to be frustrated within a weeks’ time they will shake themselves into right focus and get back to work, or they will attend training, or following some suggestions. However, if you have someone who has convinced themselves that it wasn’t really going to work in the first place you need to let them go.
The Growth Strategy
When you focus on retention you do not foster a growth mentality, simply put focus on retention you are not growing. You should always be focused on growth and how you can grow your business and inspire those who want to be inspired. Inspiration creates growth. If you truly want retention hit the next rank. Every time you hit a new rank and you are being recognized your team will see that and it will inspire them because they want to do the same, which leads to growth and a strong inspired team.
The following are tips to remember:
INSPIRE, DO NOT MANAGE
PLUG INTO A GREAT COMMUNITY (whether it is Facebook, etc.)
TRAINING, TRAINING, TRAINING (books, conferences, webinars, phone calls, etc) P.S.: LOCAL, REGIONAL, NATIONAL TRAININGS SHOULD NEVER BE MISSED
EXCEL (Get to Your next rank)
If you truly want retention following the four aforementioned things will get you there and remember if there is someone who really wants to go, please respect their decision and let them go. Trying to hold on to someone who wants to leave will make you frustrated and it is a waste of time. Of course you are allowed to waste time, but the thing is you can waste time or waste money, you cannot do both. You can spend your time investing into those who are working and on recruiting more people.
