WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ACHIEVERS AND "AVERAGERS"?

Have you ever been frustrated with yourself because you are not like the individuals who just seem to get all the green lights in life? Have you been scared of trying something new and different thinking it will end up a failure like all the other things you have tried? Have you ever felt overwhelmed by your life being Average and the possibility of it always staying that way? Have you ever lacked the motivation to do what achievers do in order to get out of the average zone? Guess what, you do not have to be an “Averager”.

Once you understand what creates an achiever or at minimum the mindset of one who achieves you are well on your way to becoming one. There are some people in life who just seem to get it right every single time. They seem to possess the Midas touch. There are some that would say they are lucky or those are blessings from God. Whatever you call it some people just seem to achieve incredible things in spite of difficult circumstances. Do you notice it does not matter what type of work they do, if they are in the equation you just know the outcome will be success. I believe that most people do not consider themselves average and tend to think that they are above that. However, a person who is an achiever does not even mess with average it is not in their vocabulary. Being ordinary to an achiever is something that they just cannot comprehend.

THE DIFFERENCE MAKER

So what is the secret formula that makes the difference? Why are there some people who succeed no matter what they do? Could the difference be family background, wealth, great opportunities, high morals and character? No, it could not be any of these because I am sure you have seen a wealthy person turn everything he or she touches to ashes. I am also sure that you have seen a father who is a super-athlete and has a son who has two left feet. So none of these traits matter at all when it comes to a person being an achiever. There is only one tangible factor that we all have which separates those who consistently shine and perform well above others from those who do not. The one factor that is the difference between an average person and an achieving individual is the way in which they perceive. It is not just a person’s perception it is their perception of failure and their response to it.

One reality that we all MUST realize is that we all fail, but it does not make us failures. An achiever knows this and internalizes this as fact for their lives. An achiever also realizes that how they view failure and deal with that failure will impact their lives and the outcome of their level of success. They understand that it is not an option to deal with failure by looking at the glass half empty but by viewing it as a glass half full. Achievers seem to possess the ability to see pass and through the failure and continue achieving. This is a big factor that halts and breaks many a great individual. Because we all encounter failure it is just a way of life, however some of us get paralyzed and will not take a step forward and barrel through the problem. An achiever on the other hand will encounter the problem, be in a mode of forward progression and just like a train continue through. An achiever will not stop because they understand stopping is not going to make the problem go away. They would rather barrel through the problem and receive the reward called success in the end instead of doing what the average person does which is deal with the problem and the problem takes away their success.

AN ACHIEVER’S STORY

The word failure gets a bad grade. Yeah, an “F”. But, truthfully failure is unavoidable. For instance, when a child spills milk are they a failure? Absolutely not! Did they fail in keeping their cup on the table without wasting the milk, yes. We often equate failing something with us personally being failures. That concept is so far from the truth. I remember, when I initially started the process of obtaining my doctorate degree, I had to drive to Atlanta, Georgia from Cincinnati, Ohio to complete my residency. I drove down and had to turn in a paper at the end of the session. My laptop was experiencing problems and all of the hotel computers were being used. I could not receive less than a “B” on the final project or I would have to repeat and repay for my residency. Well, long story short I received a “C” because I turned in a partial due to computer complications. Needless, to say my wife was not happy and neither was I for that matter. Did that make me a failure—NO. Did I fail that project, yes I did and I received the extra bill for the second residency to prove it. But did that deter me from continuing through the doctorate program. I will be honest it never occurred to me to ever quit that was not an option. The point is if you keep proper perspective you can become an achiever.

One of the most incredible stories as it relates to Network Marketing and achievement is that of Mary Kay Ash. Yes, we know her as Mary Kay--the owner of the cosmetics company. Mary Kay was in direct sales for years and experienced a lot of success. However, the level of success was always stifled because of her being a woman in the corporate world during the 50s and 60s. After over 25 years of being in the corporate world and dealing with having no real value particularly in a men’s world so to speak she retired. Becoming bored with retirement she decided to start her own business. She decided that it would be a cosmetics company that would empower other women to own their own businesses. She purchased formulas, developed a marketing plan and prepared to set up the corporation. So she went to her lawyer and accountant who both informed her that she was crazy. She did not care what either one had to say she forged through with her life savings of $5,000. She hired her husband to handle the administrative side but a month before they were going to open for business her husband died. Despite those scary circumstances she continued on and became the success that we know of today.

CONCLUSION

Just like Mary Kay we all possess the ability to overcome any obstacles that we face. Take a moment to think of a recent setback. It could be financial, emotional, etc. Whatever it is, the key to becoming an achiever and overcoming is done by a change that is within. You cannot change your circumstances but you can change yourself. You can view your situation differently and consequently handle it differently. This process of self-change begins with you being coachable. If you are willing to humble yourself to the tutelage of another who has gone through you will be able to handle any setback or failure. I want you to make a commitment to yourself from this day moving forward to do whatever it takes to achieve which may put you in a position to fail but do it moving forward.
