In my experience I have learned that in order for you to actually be successful in an area you have to know what it is and have a level of understanding about what it is. Therefore, in order for you to develop a powerful vision for yourself and your business this year let’s get some understanding about what a vision is. It is not too late. The definition of vision is:
vi•sion ('vi-zhən): the act or power of seeing that which will or may come to be, as through keen foresight: a person of vision.
What is a vision?
A vision is a way in which you describe the future of your desires. A vision is an empowerment source that enables you to stand as a co-creator with God for the best possible life while here on earth. A vision is about having Purpose Directed Success which is being able to know where you are headed, with a clear meaning to achieve your goal. A vision is a guiding force and an inspiration to you. It also serves as a GPS to aid you when you are off course or to help you gauge how close you are to your goal. As I mentioned a vision is Purpose Directed Success.
Life Coach Jenna Avery said "Your soul's hunger is your guide to the greatest expression of who you are". Therefore, as you create your vision you are just allowing your hungry soul to guide you to the maximum manifestation of who you are. So, what is your soul hungry for? What do you want to convey? Creating a vision is about putting your desires, your longings, your dreams and goals in print. Remember that whatever you focus on will increase and when you create a vision it will help you focus on what you really want!
Writing a personal vision, one that encompass all of your aspirations in all areas of your life can feel daunting or come off as somewhat contrived, but I assure you there has been no better task in my experience when it comes to making change and achieving better outcomes. So what will implementing said vision look like?
CREATING A VISION IN 10 EASY STEPS
1- GET OFF THE HAMSTER WHEEL!
Yes, you will need to get off the hamster wheel that continues to keep you seeing the same thing year after year (and by the way I am not calling you a rodent). However, our lives tend to resemble that of a hamster on a wheel. Perhaps you work too hard or maybe you’re struggling to sponsor. Either way, living your daily grind can feel a lot like a hamster wheel you just can’t seem to get off of. Being so close to the detail sometimes makes it very difficult to see the forest through the trees and periodically it makes sense to step off and gain some perspective, which gets us to 2014. This is a natural time to reset as people everywhere create New Year’s resolutions at the beginning of the year, vision letters or vision statements. So, where to begin? If you are going to make a success of your business you need to carve out the time to complete these steps and let go of your regular routine, thus getting off the wheel. Set aside at least 7-10 days for this window.
2- PUT EXTRA EFFORT INTO SELF CARE.
Use this time to really take care of yourself. If you know how to cook and eat healthy, do it. If you have a gym membership – go. If you are into massages or facials, schedule them. When you are taken care of it allows you to take care of others and get focused.
3- GET UP EARLY IN THE MORNING AND WRITE.
Before your brain can begin its usual daily chatter you need to head it off at the path. Get up at least an hour earlier than you usually do and spend that time writing, journaling, meditating, etc. Set your schedule and make a list. Remember what you wrote in your vision letter which should serve as your vision statement you now need to develop the creation of your process. Now spend this time setting your schedule meaning if you want to get a new car maybe your network marketing opportunity allows for you to qualify for one. Find out how many people you need to help in order to qualify for the car. Let’s assume it is 20 total. Let’s say it will take you to show your presentation to 80 in order for you to sponsor a total of 20 people. If you take it over a 2 month period of time you are showing your presentation less than one time per day which is a doable goal.
4- READ EVERYTHING YOU WROTE AND IDENTIFY PATTERNS.
After 10 days of writing, go back and read it all over again. Schedule a weekend and be someplace comfortable. Now is when you want to look for patterns and be honest with yourself about what you are reading. In particular look for common themes you seem to be struggling with and clearly identify what it is you want to change about these themes. Make a list of these challenges. These TRUTH TELLERS as I refer to them (your challenges) allow you to honestly look at yourself and to make the necessary adjustments to put step 3 into place. If you are not truthful with yourself you will never reach your goal.
5- MAP YOUR SUCCESSES.
Make a list of the major accomplishments you have had in your life, in particular the one’s you feel a strong personal sense of accomplishment for achieving. Next to each one, write down what you did to achieve the outcome and be specific about any skill you used or ability you feel you demonstrated. It is important that you receive accolades for what you do whether big or small. To visually see what you have been able to achieve it will continue to fuel you.
6- YOUR WRITTEN VISION MAY NEED TO BE AMENDED.
In your vision statement or vision letter you should have identified major categories such as Home, Career, Finances, Relationships, Travel, etc. Each category you should have written an aspirational sentence about who you want to be in that area. These sentences should have been short and to the point. For example: “I have sponsored 100 personals” or “I am a loving spouse”. It’s also important that what you wrote or amend be entirely about you and not place any specific expectations on others.
7- CREATE AN ACTION PLAN USING SMART GOALS.
It is vital to identify a series of small, do-able action steps. What is something you could do towards your vision in the next week? In the next two weeks? Where would you like to be a month from now? On a separate sheet of paper, in a planner or on a check list, write out 1-2 small actions you can take in the coming week specific to each category. Match the skills you listed from your successes to your goals in the areas you want to improve and then use those skills to create your actions. For example; if your vision for your business is “I personally sponsored 100 people in 6 months” and previously you had never done something like this, then one action step you might take this week is to search for more leads or to teach someone on your team how to do what you did and actually walk with them. You can even set a goal to talk to 2 new people per day so that it is measurable and at the end of the week you can feel like you are making progress. What I’m describing here is a technique known as writing SMART goals and building on your strengths to make progress in areas you struggle. As you achieve each goal you will need to create a new one that takes you one step further.
8- READ YOUR VISION TWICE A DAY.
Have your vision written down someplace by your bed (if you did your homework you should already have it SMILE). Read it as you go to bed and every morning when you get up. As you fall asleep, ask yourself “did I stick to my vision today?” After you read your vision in the morning, pick up your goals for the day and get started.
9- TELL OTHERS ABOUT YOUR VISION.
You want to get to the point that your friends and family become use to you using the phrases “I did this to support my vision today” or “that’s not in alignment with my vision”. It may take some time to make this a natural part of how you talk. Remember to stay light-hearted and joke about it from time to time. Do not take yourself too seriously and remember to share what you are trying to achieve with those in your life. If you don’t communicate with them and tell them, they won’t know how to support you. You may not believe this but they will surprise you on occasion because they do want to see you succeed.
10- CELEBRATE SMALL WINS RIGHT AWAY.
Set up rewards for yourself early. For small wins I like to go to my favorite Chinese Buffet for an inexpensive but really great lunch with my wife. For big wins I take myself and family out to a nice dinner and some form of entertainment (i.e. movie, indoor race car driving, etc.). My wife loves the occasional spa treatment when she sets her small wins. Repurpose part of your regular routine to support your goals. For example, if you go to Happy Hour on Fridays make going to Happy Hour a reward for hitting your goals that week. If you don’t hit them – withhold the reward and try again the next week. You can also reward yourself with your favorite TV shows.
BONUS TIP
STICK TO YOUR VISION FOR 6 MONTHS BEFORE MODIFYING.
I am a believer that you have to stick with something in order to gauge whether it is effective or not. Therefore, stick to your vision for a solid period of time and if it is not working after that time modify. It’s important that you experience the struggles and successes associated with long term objectives. My experience has been that I have learned more from my struggles than my successes. So without a struggle every now and then we do not grow. I have learned to let prayer and my faith in God serve as support to help me go beyond my limits. You can do the same. Hopefully your vision is a stretch for you, which means you need to expand and grow in order to make it a reality. Get help and support in your process of expansion and growth. You can do it!
We live in a world jam packed with instant gratification. You may need to teach yourself how to enjoy delayed gratification. If you commit to 6 months before modifying eventually you will be able to commit to a year, then two years and work your way up to a 5-10 year plan. And that letter that you wrote yourself, it will be for real. It will not just seem like rhetoric. You should be able to look around and say those words with assurance and conviction.
Blessings to you creating your vision! It’s not likely it will be easy every day but with practice, dedication and a little patience you will make the life you want for yourself.
