DIRECTED
The Past and Present
In the past I have always been taught and trained that the opportunity is the most important. Owning your own business, being in business for yourself, becoming self-employed is what everyone seeking most, as I thought. I was taught that after you have introduced this wonderful opportunity then you can go into more about the product. I have been in a few network marketing companies and it is different for them all. One of the things that I noticed and realized is that, a business that has mass appeal such as coffee, travel, etc. is a business that should be built on its product. However, a network marketing company that does not have a broad appeal should be built upon the business opportunity.
I presently recruit a little differently than what I was taught in the past. As much as I know that there are individuals who would love to own their own business or be in business for themselves that notion seems to be short lived when that is the sole reason for their existence in the business. Throughout my history of network marketing the majority of individuals that I have recruited were involved because of the product. In fact, I had a customer who said she wanted to dis-enroll herself but she could not because of the benefits of the products “they are just such great products”. I have found that when individuals are crazy about the products they will come on board with the opportunity. There was one company that promoted for their representatives to use the product (which was more to me like a service than a product). When their representatives used the product they not only continued to use the product they became stronger representatives and their businesses thrived.
#1 MLM Recruiting Advice
If you have a product that has mass appeal like coffee, health, etc., you can mention to a person that they may not like the business but they may love the product. Most times people will come back and say to you hey I would like to hear about the business especially if you pull it away. It is no different from when you recommend a movie, a realtor, a dry cleaner, etc. to a friend. You can recommend and talk about a product more if you are passionate about it due to familiarity. This is the same passion that most people will buy a product. When you build a business promoting a product, you can build a strong and smart business with great retention.
Ray Higdon mentioned that in the book Contagious by Jonah Berger he writes about word of mouth advertising. He writes about the differences in the strength of online social media word of mouth vs. offline friends and family word of mouth. He says that 7% of online word of mouth converts to a purchase. This conversion I believe is due to the fact that people will share their thoughts and views about the things that they love. Therefore, promoting your business on its products is far more powerful than the opportunity.
SUCCESS
I challenge you to test the theory of product vs. opportunity. Go to 100 people talk to them about the product and go to 100 people and talk to them about the opportunity and see which you have more success with. This challenge not only will push you it will push your business as well. The next few blog posts will go more in-depth into the psychology of recruiting, what you should be saying when you recruit, how you can prospect smarter and what it would take to become a top earner in your company.
